Asian Athletics Championship: Arshad Nadeem wins gold with 86.40m javelin throw

GUMI: Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem has claimed gold at the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea, with a massive 86.40m throw in the men’s javelin final.

Sachin Yadav of India secured the silver medal with a best throw of 85.16m, while Japan’s Yuta Sakiyama earned bronze with 83.75m throw.

Pakistan’s another athlete, Muhammad Yasir, finished eighth with a 75.39m throw.

While Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who was on top in the first few throws, managed to finish fourth with an 83.27m throw. India’s Yash Vir Singh finished fifth with an 82.57m personal best throw.

Javelin throw ace Nadeem kicked off his campaign at the Asian Athletics Championships final with a confident first throw of 75.64m. However, he launched a massive 85.57-metre throw in fourth attempt, making him to the top of the table.

Arshad’s gold is Pakistan’s first and only medal at the ongoing Asian Athletics Championship. Earlier, Pakistan’s fastest female sprinter Tameem Khan finished 17th in the Women’s 100m heats with a 12.14.

Meanwhile, top sprinter Shajar Abbas ran a 47.17 in the Men’s 400m heats, and a 47.38 in the semi-finals, where he finished 12th. Abdul Mueed ran a 50.10 in the heats and finished 27th.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Arshad Nadeem on the splendid victory as he continues to make the nation proud.
